What is it?

Appraisals form an important part of an employees development and affords the opportunity to receive feedback on how they are performing and to express any concerns or career aspirations they might have.   They are part of performance management and help with employee engagement.  An appraisal carried out well is well worth the time and trouble and should make the management of teams easier.  It sets out clear objectives for the following 12 months and details how an employee can progress by assigning, under agreement, more senior tasks to them.
