Articles

This month's article is entitled What not to do When you are Training.

When we are training we are alone, that is to say that we do not have someone looking over us when we are training.  Trainers by definition and the people that train are self-regulating.  We are able to work for long periods without supervision or contact with a Manager or Supervisor and for someone new to the world of Learning and Development this can be a daunting experience or one filled with great freedom to do as we please when we please.  Tempting though this is we rarely do because when you are a Training Practitioner there comes a level of responsibility for yourself and the people that you train or converse with in carrying out your duties.

When you are Training you need to be the business, that is to be an almost perfect example of the model employee by adhering to and enforcing company policies like

·  Diversity and Equality

·  Equal Opportunities (Read full article)

To Handout or not to Handout that is the Question

Providing Training can be a costly exercise for any organisation, especially when times are tough.  The equipment and materials needed by a Trainer to deliver effective training vary considerably from course to course and subject to subject.

The more technical or the more legal information that is required dictates how many handouts are required.  The question of handouts is a big one, hence the title of this article.  The costs involved in producing handouts can get out of control.  You have the cost of ink or toner to print them, the paper, the electricity and then the time it takes to print them and put them together or in order.

So what should a handout be?

A handout should be a useful document, a document or series of documents that enhance what you are talking about and provide a visual (Read Full Article)

Using and Understanding Learning Styles in a Training Event is Vital

The Identification of Learning Styles has been around since the mid-80s and are used in conjunction with Kolb’s Learning Cycle that was developed in 1974.  Since then many more theories have been developed to identify learning styles and how people learn.

A number of people use the VAK model taken from Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP that was developed by Richard Bandler and others in the early 1970s.  NLP is a tool used to understand how people communication VAK being Visual, Auditory and kinaesthetic meaning that if you are a visual person you communicate with pictures or prefer information in diagrammatic form, Auditory people communicate with sounds and would rather receive information audibly and Kinaesthetic people go mainly with their feelings and would like a ‘hands on’ approach to receiving information.  I do not believe that this model directly helps us understand how people learn.  It does tell us how they like to communicate but not how they like to learn.

Kolb’s learning cycle is still in use today as it is the basics of how learning is completed.  Without completing the cycle learning cannot happen.  The learning Styles show how different people start in different places on the cycle but, they still have to progress through each of the styles to complete it.

The different learning styles are based on Kolb's Learning cycle and were developed by Honey and Mumford. This is where this model is different... (Read Full Article)

Handling Change in your Training Events.

Running a Training Event brings change to how someone acts, reacts, thinks and goes about their daily tasks.  If Training did not do this, training would be a worthless exercise.  How you handle the change in your Training Event speaks volumes about you as a trainer.  Understanding the impact that change can have on individuals is important to manage your training event successfully.

Training can be defined as

‘A process to modify Knowledge, Skill, Attitude or Ability through learning

to achieve improved performance in an activity or range of activities

developing the skills of the individual to satisfy the current and future

needs of an organisation’

and Learning as

‘A relatively permanent change in behaviour that occurs as a result of

 practice or experience’

Training is done to people and learning is what the people do.  How they handle change determines how ‘relatively permanent’ the change is.  If you choose to ignore that change does... (Read Full Article)
